卡琳战争结束时住在意大利的一个难民营里，她没有钱离开那儿去别处谋生，在难民营她遇到了意大利士兵安东尼奥并和他结了婚，随他回到了家乡斯特隆波岛。在荒凉的火山岛上，当地人的生活习惯和习俗让卡琳感到非常失落，她所做的一切都被认为是有悖民风的，是个坏女人，卡琳想逃离海岛，她逃到了火山上，昏迷后醒来，孤独的她唯有祈求上帝给他帮助和启示……Living in an Italian refugee camp in 1948, the beautiful Karen meets Antonio, a resident of the men's camp. While not in love with him, Karen marries him and they soon set of for his home village, Stromboli. The village is on a remote island at the foot of an active volcano. She despairs at what she finds when she arrives. The village is on barren land and virtually devoid of people as many have left, mostly for the United States. She doesn't speak the local dialect and is treated with disdain by some of the locals who see her as an exotic foreigner and a loose woman. After Antonio beats her and locks her in their house, she sets off across the mountains to seek her freedom and a better future.
